Evangelical UCC
Here at Evangelical, we are part of the
UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
and a member of the Illinois South Conference.
We have been at the current location in Godfrey since 1968. Prior to that we were located at 8th and Henry in Alton. We began as an Evangelical German denomination, Alton Evangelical Church, founded in 1850 and became Evangelical United Church of Christ in 1968. The founding pastor was Rev. C.E. Zobel from 1850-1851. There have been several pastors throughout the life of the church. Most of them served between 2 and 7 years before moving on to another congregation. However, the Rev. O.W. Heggemeier, served from Dec. 1916 - 1953 - 37 years! An interesting anecdote about Rev. Heggemeier, the following was published in the Alton Telegraph April 20, 1947 ," For the first time in his 30 years as pastor of the Evangelical Church at Eighth and Henry streets, the Rev. O.W. Heggemeier was absent from his pulpit. He was a patient in Alton Memorial Hospital where he had been taken when he collapsed shortly after conducting Easter services and giving communion to 1,000 persons."
In 1968 the Rev. Walter Krebs became the minister and was a leading figure in the creation of the Evangelical School for the Young Years and then Evangelical Elementary School. He was a part of this congregation until 1992, 24 years.
Pastor Jerry MeCaskey led our congregation from 2005-2023.
Reverend Tim Darmour- Paul is the current interim Pastor since December 2023.
With increasing classes to accommodate students through the Eighth grade, the Family Ministry Center groundbreaking was in October of 2002.
Today EUCC continues to support the Pre-K through Eighth grades schools and to minister to the communities of Godfrey and Alton.
